The truth about European history..

The truth is there is no European history except for the Nazi regime and maybe Stalin && The Romanov's.

Why do I say this?

Because if I was a little kid who is as gullible as a sponge and I walked to my local library in Redditch then that's what I would find. I would then proceed to spend the next several years in a ignorant form of bliss where the only European history would be Nazi's, Romanov's, Stalin && a little bit about Italian Fascism.

My rude awakening would be when I go to a better library somewhere else and find a lot more stuff or when my history teacher stared at me and said something along the lines of "You Fascist!" Then proceeds to lecture me on how fascism is wrong.

And this form of rant comes from the fact that yesterday at about half 11 I found myself at the Redditch Library looking at European History. I have history coursework in the near future on a topic of my choice as long as I can find a suitable question. I was steered well clear of Nazi previously and so I ventured in search of a new topic and for some reason I found myself pondering the idea of doing the Spanish Inquisition - no idea why but the Monty Python sketch happened to pop into my head one day.

And so I thought: "Well I know bugger all about it and I'd better do some background reading."

And so I had half an hour before meeting Amy and so I thought I'll browse the library. Originally I was looking for a book on photography but I found a book about 'The Most Evil People In History.' Of which the head of the Spanish Inquisition was mentioned - in fact he had a whole little section to himself.

Seeing as said book had little information altogether, I wandered to the European History section. Assuming Spain was in Europe and was a part of history I expected to find at least one thing about it.

Alas I was very, very, very wrong. If this had been situation was trying to find a cure for mad cow disease I'd have sent the whole world mad.
All I saw in this section was:
Several books on Hitler
Several more books on the Nazi regime
Several more books on how the Nazi Regime came to power
Several REALLY thick books on Nazism && Hitler together!
Stalin
Communism
Several books on the Romanov's
Several books on the plan to save the Romanov's
One book about Tudor King && Queens
One book about the Spanish civil war
And
A lot about Redditch history (Why is that in European history? Shouldn't it be in local history?).

Alex was
1) Not happy at all.
2) Confused.
3) Bored.

Why do people assume the only thing that happened in Europe since Europe was established to now was the Nazi's and Communism and the Romanov's (oh and Redditch)?! There were a few books on other things but they were tiny thin things compared to the 1000+ paged Hitler books that smothered almost every self!!

Why?!

Yes it was horrific, yes people died, yes Jews were picked on but Jews were picked on during the Black Plague as well - but no one writes a book about that do they?!
And a man named Dracula (real man y'know) killed hundreds of people and shoved their heads on stakes but nnoo one writes about that do they considering he's considered one of the most evil men in history along with Hitler && Stalin!

I mean come on people! If I want to find out about Nazi's I'd read my dad's flipping book!
They'll be publishing the works of Hitler's failed art next and putting that on the European history self.

I prefer to read books rather than read off the internet because the internet is often boring to read off and I get distracted by various other sites and now I have to trail to another library, sit in Waterstones fora good hour or so reading a book I can't afford to buy OR write a letter of complaint.

The latter being the easiest yet most annoying (for the library staff not me).

Thanks for making the text bigger :)

Also what i've leared from blogging is keep the paragraphs snappy you have to adapt your english to a different audience.

Bah! This is what frustrated me most at the Holocaust educational trust, the fact that there were so many people saying that the Nazi's and the Nazi regime and the holocaust was the most horrific thing ever in history.
I think I got moaned by our group leader by offering the suggestion that we can't move on from things like the Holocaust because it's easier to talk about the past than it is to realise the suffering of today and that we could never have stopped it and we it will never stop, people are going to be slaughtered in the name of politics. End of. >_<

But yeah it's begun to irritate me recently, I suppose they only stock the infomation which people find intresting, Nazis being one of them. It's much easier to get a book on Nazism than finding a book on the Spanish Inquisition. *shrugs*
And Redditch Library isn't a big library.

*shrugs*
